Donors to the Dustin Fund provide money for non-routine but essential veterinary care for C.O.P.E. dogs. The Fund was set up in honour of the first C.O.P.E. dog, 'Dustin' who died of cancer at age eight. If you would like to honour Dustin or a special pet, please specify 'Dustin Fund' with your contribution and include a paragraph about your special pet.  Your pet's paragraph will be printed on our website.

High School Assistance Dog Programs

Each C.O.P.E. dog’s 2-year training regime is undertaken by local high school youth who are at risk of leaving school early. Under the direct supervision of our professional instructors, the referred students are taught how to train, care for and prepare their assigned puppy for a career helping those in need.

Young Minds’ Puppy Training Program
- Junior Pup

At birth, puppy minds could be compared to an empty book. Early experiences have a strong impact, as would
a few words on a blank page. The youth trainers are taught to ensure that positive experiences begin to fill the book that is the puppy’s brain. Both in the classroom and in public settings, the students teach their Junior Pups how to retrieve objects, turn on lights, help with dressing, assist with shopping - all tasks that will help the pup’s final partner become more independent.

L.E.A.D - Leader Education Assistance
Dog Program – Senior Pup

The focus of the Senior Pup year of training is to practice all the necessary skills so that eventually, even the most challenging of tasks can be performed in any situation. The youth handlers use the skills they have learned to guide their pup through this period of practice and psychological maturation. During this process, the team also assists others by offering therapeutic interactions and reading and math assistance for elementary school children.
