About COPE Service Dogs

COPE Service Dogs’ mission is “To provide a remarkable education program that engages communities and empowers students and others in the training of service dogs that will transform the lives of people with disabilities.”  Our services Include:

  • Training and placing Service Dogs – COPE permanently places specially trained dogs with people who have disabilities;
  • Training and placing Facility Dogs – COPE permanently places specially trained dogs with professionals to augment their therapeutic practice to assist people in need;
  • Canines in the Classroom (CIC) for students who are struggling with engagement in school – a unique component of the dog’s training as students at risk help train the dogs in conjunction with a certified service dog trainer;
  • The Ready Buddy program for elementary students who struggle with confidence and literacy; and
  • Community Canines which include some dogs in CIC and therapy visits to places like senior’s homes.

Primary Focus

To grow COPE Service Dogs’ fundraising revenue with an emphasis on events and identifying new funding relationships/opportunities. The role will also manage communications for the organization.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Fundraising (75%)

  • Develop and implement all aspects of fundraising events, including participation, sponsorship, auctions, raffles, volunteer recruitment, logistics, financial and administrative management
  • Seek opportunities for and provide support to third-party events
  • Actively seek support from service clubs and community groups, including working with Board members to make presentations
  • Seek opportunities to grow individual giving (i.e. monthly donors, tribute giving, etc.)
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director seek new opportunities to diversify existing revenue streams, including soliciting and steward major donors and prospects
  • Seek opportunities to secure funding through individual giving (i.e. monthly donors), support from local businesses (including in-kind), service clubs and major gifts (in consultation with the Executive Director)
  • Recruit, train and steward volunteers to support events, community-based fundraising and community awareness building activities
  • Ensure meaningful recognition and stewardship of community volunteers and donors

Communications (20%)

Writing & Content Management

  • Develop and implement communications strategies including developing key messages
  • Develop key indicators for success and evaluate results
  • Write, edit, and design content for newsletter, brochures, social media, fact sheets, press releases, event marketing materials, public presentations, etc.
  • Coordinate productions
  • Manage all communication materials for consistency or branding and messaging
  • Seek out opportunities and make presentations to individuals and groups about COPE, its mission, and Canines in the Classroom with the goals of securing volunteers and creating awareness and raising funds

Website & Social Media Channels

  • Maintain COPE’s website and ensure all content is up-to-date and accurate
  • Work with wed developers as needed to write, build, and populate new sections of the website, including editing and updating existing web content
  • Manage all aspects of COPE social media activities to increase engagement and awareness

Media Relations

  • Conduct outreach to engage local media, with a particular emphasis on fundraising events
  • Respond to media inquiries
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships with local media outlets, social influencers, online and print channels

Administration (5%)

  • Provide clear, timely reporting on event development, fundraising communications activities
  • Track and monitor expenses and revenues for events and related activities
  • Ensure effective database (Donor Perfect) management for volunteer and fundraising activities
  • Contribute to the budget and business planning process, with a particular focus on events
  • Ensure COPE policy and procedures are implemented and adhered to

Primary Relationships Cancel

  1. Reports directly to the Executive Director
  2. Works in collaboration with the Program Director, Office Administrator/Volunteer Coordinator, Canines in the Classroom Coordinator, Community Development Coordinator (Mississauga) and other staff as required
  3. Liaises with local volunteers, committees, service clubs, donors, businesses, foundations, and community partners
  4. Coordinates activities with local suppliers, partners, and sponsors


  • 2-3 years’ event and fundraising experience at the community level, including working with volunteers, generating awareness for organizations or projects
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint and Zoom
  • Proficient using social media (Instagram & Facebook)
  • Working knowledge of Donor Perfect
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat
  • Passion for dogs and the education of young people
  • Extremely well organized and detail oriented
  • College or University education preferred
